MORNING MESSAGE

Kenia Alcocer

Fund Head Start, Not Internment Camps

I came to this country from Mexico as a small child because my mother was escaping poverty and wanted to give my sisters and me a better life. She worked hard to make sure we had food on our table and a roof over our heads, often doing two and three jobs at a time. To get by, people in our community have to develop our own survival methods, such as getting together with neighbors to share meals or take care of each other’s kids. This difficult situation is made worse by threats of detention, deportation, and family separation. Reports of sickening conditions in children’s detention facilities, along with renewed threats by the administration to attack migrant families, have cast a dark shadow over the lives of families like mine. Immigrants contribute every day to this society — whether it’s the gardener mowing your lawn, the cook (like my mother) preparing your meal, the farm worker picking your fruits and vegetables, or the nanny helping to raise your children. Many of us, like myself, have become leaders in movements that unite poor people of all backgrounds to fight — not just to survive another day, but for the right to live a full and vibrant life. My mother crossed a desert to give me a life with dignity and basic human needs — a home, food, and education. I will continue to fight to make sure everybody lives without poverty, systemic racism, ecological devastation, and violent militarism. I hope our elected officials will too.

Congress Funds Border Aid, Overrules Progressives

House progressives cry ‘Betrayal’ and say moderate Democrats sold out detained children. Daily Beast: “House Democrats’ first major legislative defeat in their new majority unfolded sloppily on Thursday over legislation to address the humanitarian crisis on the southern border leaving the ascendant progressive faction of the party enraged and claiming they got thrown under the bus. They just couldn’t agree on who pushed them. House progressives had spent a week successfully fighting to put strings on $4.5 billion in special funding for a border package, in hopes of denying the Trump administration more resources to carry out elements of the immigration policy that Democrats loathe. The Senate had other ideas, and on Wednesday passed with an overwhelming, bipartisan majority a funding package without the progressives’ much-desired conditions. As Speaker Nancy Pelosi prepared to make a counter-offer, a faction of centrist Democrats revolted and forced a quick House vote on the Senate’s measure, which ultimately passed by a safe margin, leaving lawmakers free to jet home for the July 4 recess. The defeat left progressives stunned, fuming, and pondering how, going forward, they could effectively leverage Democrats’ House majority with an increasingly fractious caucus and a GOP all too eager to exploit their internal divides.”

SCOTUS Washes Hands Of Gerrymandering, Census Fights

SCOTUS gives a victory to G.O.P. on gerrymandering and to Democrats opposed to census citizenship question NYT: “In a pair of decisions with vast implications for the American political landscape, the Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a victory to Republicans by ruling that federal courts are powerless to hear challenges to extreme partisan gerrymandering but gave a reprieve to Democrats by delaying the Trump administration’s efforts to add a question on citizenship to the 2020 census. The key parts of both decisions were decided by 5-to-4 votes. In the gerrymandering case, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. joined his usual conservative allies. In the census case, he broke with them to vote with the court’s four-member liberal wing in preventing, for now, what advocates have argued would be a deterrent to immigrants from participating in the once-a-decade count. The gerrymandering decision was momentous, definitively closing the door on judicial challenges to voting maps warped by politics. The practice of redrawing the boundaries of voting districts is almost as old as the nation. Both parties have used it, but in recent years, Republicans have been the primary beneficiaries.”

Trump Jokes With Putin About Election Meddling

Trump can’t help himself when it comes to Putin. Politico: “At his first meeting with Putin since Robert Mueller’s Russia probe concluded, Trump made light of the robust evidence showing Russia engaged in a ‘sweeping and systematic’ campaign to disrupt the election in Trump’s favor. After he was asked by reporter if he will talk to Putin about election interference — a topic he failed to mention himself, Trump responded: ‘Yes, of course I will.’ But he didn’t stop there. He turned to Putin, seated next to him, smiling and pointing his finger in the Russian president’s direction, and said jokingly, “Don’t meddle in the election, president. Don’t meddle in the election.” Putin, after appearing to hear the translation, laughed while Trump grinned. The episode at the G-20 conference, an annual gathering of the world’s 20 biggest economies, will do nothing to ease the long-standing perception that Trump is too friendly toward Russia — a relationship that has alarmed Democrats and Republicans alike and led to congressional investigations. But it could have been expected, according to his current and former advisers. Trump often bristles at being told what to say or do, they say. So when pushed, the president simply mocks what is expected of him, even when it comes to Russia.”

Pregnant AL Woman Shot In Stomach Charged With Manslaughter

A pregnant woman shot in the stomach is indicted in her unborn child’s death. CNN: “Once again, Alabama is at the forefront of a nationwide debate over the rights of pregnant women. This time, the controversy stems from the case of a pregnant woman who was shot in the stomach and is now charged with manslaughter for the death of her unborn child. ‘The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,’ Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid told AL.com. But that characterization incensed critics who say Alabama keeps prioritizing fetuses over women. That characterization incensed critics who say Alabama keeps prioritizing fetuses over women. Last month, the state passed the country’s strictest abortion law, which makes virtually all abortions illegal. The law says doctors who perform illegal abortions could face up to 99 years in prison.”

Sparks Fly In Democratic Debate

Democratic rising stars outshine Biden and Sanders on the debate stage. NYT: “The big question going into Thursday night’s debate was whether Joe Biden, the clear front-runner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, would stumble. That turned out to be the wrong one. The right question was whether he had sufficient vigor in his stride. And the answer came in watching Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg — two of the event’s standout performers — run articulate and impassioned circles around him. n his determination to prove how coolheaded he could be, he frequently turned his temperature down too low. In his insistence on not getting tangled in grand promises or lost in the weeds, he too often kept to the side of the field. At one point, when candidates were asked to raise their hands if they believed that crossing the border without documentation should be a civil rather than criminal offense, his gesture was so tentative and ambiguous that one of the moderators, José Díaz-Balart, had to follow up: Was he indicating his assent or seeking permission to make a comment? That was a metaphor for his whole night. Other candidates demanded that America march forward. Biden kept looking backward. He repeatedly alluded to his decades of experience and even more pointedly reminded voters of his eight-year partnership with President Barack Obama, a towering and popular figure in the Democratic Party. While Bernie Sanders pledged a revolution, Biden promised a restoration. Will that make voters feel tingly enough? It’s possible, given the ongoing trauma of the Trump years. But the debate brought into vivid relief the shortcomings of his candidacy and the risks of graduating him to the general election.”

MORNING MESSAGE

Leo Gerard

NAFTA By Any Name Is Built For The Rich

Mick Mulvaney, the millionaire who is President Trump’s acting chief of staff and director of the Office of Management and Budget, has awarded himself another job: spokesman for labor. Referring to the proposed new NAFTA, he told the Wall Street Journal, “We know that labor supports it.” That’s the problem with NAFTA, old and new. One percenters like Mulvaney negotiate the deals, then claim they speak for labor. But they don’t give a damn about jobs or wages or workers’ welfare. The ravages NAFTA has inflicted on the non-rich prove that. The proposed new NAFTA is barely different. And Mulvaney, while he wants to usurp labor’s voice, is far from labor’s mouthpiece. Labor speaks for itself. And it is railing against NAFTA, old and new. Ultimately, labor needs trade deals negotiated with workers at the table from the start to ensure human well-being is the priority in trade, not one-percenters’ greed.

SCOTUS Blocks Census Citizenship Test

SCOTUS blocks census citizen question, for now. CNN: “”The Supreme Court has blocked a citizenship question from being added to the 2020 census for the time being. The bitter controversy centers around whether the Trump administration can ask all recipients a citizenship question on the 2020 census for the first time since 1950. The data obtained from the 2020 census is used for the allocation of congressional seats and the distribution of billions of federal dollars to states and localities over the next decade. The Trump administration claimed the citizenship question on the census questionnaire is necessary to better comply with federal voting rights law. Critics argued it is an attempt to intimidate noncitizens and Hispanic households and will lead to a decline in response rates and underrepresentation of minorities.”

SCOTUS Smiles On Partisan Gerrymandering

Supreme Court says federal courts cannot strike down partisan gerrymandering schemes. USA Today: “A deeply divided Supreme Court ruled Thursday that federal courts may not intervene to block even the most partisan election maps drawn by state lawmakers, a decision that allows such gerrymandering to continue unabated. The 5-4 opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts and joined by the court’s other conservatives said partisan election maps drawn by North Carolina Republicans and Maryland Democrats are constitutional despite their one-sided nature. It was a dramatic withdrawal by the nation’s highest court from the political battles that have consumed states for decades, and it was loudly denounced by the court’s liberal justices. ‘We have no commission to allocate political power and influence in the absence of a constitutional directive or legal standards to guide us in the exercise of such authority,’ Roberts said. Associate Justice Elena Kagan decried the ruling on behalf of the court’s four liberals. ‘Of all the times to abandon the court’s duty to declare the law, this was not the one,’ she said. ‘The practices challenged in these cases imperil our system of government.’”

Banks Cut Off Private Migrant Detention Centers

Bank of America will no longer do business with companies that run detention centers. CNN: “Bank of America will end its association with companies that provide prisoner and immigrant detention services at both the state and federal levels. The move comes amid growing public concern about the nation’s border policies. A spokesperson said Wednesday that Bank of America (BAC) has discussed the issue with its clients that provide those services. While the bank appreciates ‘steps they have taken to properly execute their contractual and humanitarian responsibilities,’ it ultimately decided to ‘exit the relationships.’ ‘Lacking further legal and policy clarity, and in recognition of the concerns of our employees and stakeholders in the communities we serve, it is our intention to exit these relationships,’ the spokesperson said. The Miami Herald previously reported that Bank of America was a financier of Caliburn — which the newspaper said runs a facility called Homestead under a US government contract. The Herald said the bank provided a $380 million loan to the company and a $75 million credit line. The paper indicated Homestead is not a prison, but ‘protesters say it functions as one. The minors held inside are not allowed to leave.’ Bank of America declined to comment Wednesday regarding the companies with which it had previously worked. Private prisons have been in the spotlight. On Friday, Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren called for private correctional and detention facilities to be banned. Shares of private prison operators dropped following her remarks.”

EPA Blocks Collective Bargaining

With New ‘Imposed Contract,’ Trump’s EPA tries to neuter worker rights. Common Dreams: “The Trump administration continued its attacks on federal workers this week with a new ‘agreement’ that would kneecap the power of unions representing EPA employees. The development, as watchdog group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) noted Wednesday, is a new “Master Collective Bargaining Agreement” between the federal agency and the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). Far from an agreement, said PEER, the document is really an edict.’ It was not the result of negotiations. ‘In the Trump world, there is no bargaining, only ultimatums,’ said PEER executive director Tim Whitehouse, a former EPA enforcement attorney.”

Criminalization Of Immigrants Rooted In White Supremacy

Who’s behind the law making undocumented immigrants criminals? An ‘unrepentant white supremacist.’. WaPo:“The provision of federal law criminalizing unlawful entry into the United States — which some Democratic presidential candidates now want to undo — was crafted by an avowed white supremacist who opposed the education of black Americans and favored lynching, which he justified by saying,’to hell with the Constitution.’ The law, referred to as Section 1325, became a flash point in the first of two Democratic presidential debates this week, when Julián Castro, a former secretary of housing and urban development, challenged his rivals to back its repeal. The measure’s little-known history did not arise on Wednesday night in Miami, where the first cohort of Democrats vying to compete against President Trump took the stage. No one mentioned Sen. Coleman Livingston Blease. But the legacy of the criminal lawyer and neo-Confederate politician from South Carolina hangs over the 2020 election. Blease was the architect of Section 1325, the part of Title 8 of the United States Code that makes it a misdemeanor to enter the country without authorization.”

New York Points A New Way Forward For The Nation

What happens at America’s state level can sometimes reverse the political momentum of the entire nation. We experienced just such a reversal in 1978, when California conservatives pushed our country to the right. We may be poised to take a new direction – thanks to important victories in New York State for progressives. Back then, on a calm June day, conservatives engineered a California earthquake. They won nearly two-to-one voter support for a ballot initiative that wrote a cap on local property taxes into the state constitution. This “Prop 13” initiative would in short order crater funding for California’s world-class public services. But Prop 13’s most lasting impact would be political. Prop 13 gave America’s cheerleaders for grand private fortune a simple winning formula for electoral success: Make elections about cutting taxes. Always. Four decades later, we’re still living amid the extreme inequality Prop 13 did so much to create. But now, New York has enacted — over fierce billionaire opposition — legislation that takes a giant step toward defining decent, secure housing as a basic human right. With this and other recent wins, progressive forces in New York have clearly changed the political conversation in the state — and maybe the nation.

Revelations From Border Crisis Spark Outrage

Tragic photo shows migrant girl and dad who died trying to cross the Rio Grande. CBS: “A tragic image from the southern border reveals the grim reality facing many Central American migrants who make the dangerous journey. The image shows a young father and his daughter who died trying to cross the Rio Grande in south Texas. They were found in shallow water, a few hundred yards from where they tried to cross. The girl is still clinging to her father’s neck. This follows outrage over U.S. officials returning more than 100 migrant children to a facility where they reportedly lived in inhumane conditions. The father, Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez, had traveled from El Salvador with his family, hoping to claim asylum in the United States. On Sunday, Martinez’s wife said the family decided to try and cross the Rio Grande. The bodies of a Salvadoran migrant and his nearly She said her husband and daughter made it across on the first attempt. But when he tried to go back for his wife, the toddler tried to follow and fell into the water. She said Martinez grabbed the toddler, but the two were swept away by the current and couldn’t get out. The tragic story comes as more revelations are made about the migrant children who are being held at border facilities. One hundred children were returned to a Texas facility yesterday, after more than 300 had been removed following reports that they were living in horrible conditions.”

House Passes Border Humanitarian Aid, Awaits Veto

House passes $4.5 billion In emergency border aid. NPR: “The House Democratic leadership pushed through a $4.5 billion emergency aid package late Tuesday to help thousands of migrants packed into overcrowded facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border, but it’s unlikely to get a hearing in the Republican-controlled Senate. The measure passed by a 230-195 vote mostly along party lines, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tamping down a last-minute revolt by members of her party’s progressive caucus who had sought, among other things, to ban private shelter contractors who failed to provide a basic level of food, hygiene items and medical care to migrants under their care. ‘Every member of this body has a sacred moral obligation to protect the human rights and the lives of vulnerable families, no matter who they are or from where they came,’ Pelosi said ahead of the vote. The bill reportedly includes more than $1 billion to house and feed migrants detained by immigration authorities and almost $3 billion to care for unaccompanied children, according to The Associated Press. But President Trump has threatened to veto the House measure, which was not expected to get much support among Senate Republicans, either.”

Mueller To Testify Publicly Before Congress

Mueller to testify to Congress, setting up a political spectacle. NYT: “Robert S. Mueller III, the former special counsel, has agreed to testify in public before Congress next month about his investigation into Russia’s election interference and possible obstruction of justice by President Trump, House Democrats announced on Tuesday night. Coming nearly three months after the release of Mr. Mueller’s report, two back-to-back hearings on July 17 before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees promise to be among the most closely watched spectacles of Mr. Trump’s presidency. They have the power to potentially reshape the political landscape around his re-election campaign and a possible impeachment inquiry by the Democrat-controlled House. Mr. Mueller, a strait-laced former F.B.I. director who has spoken publicly only once about his work as special counsel, had resisted taking the witness stand. He knows he is certain to face questions from both sides of a pitched political fight. Many Democrats are eager to employ him to build a case against Mr. Trump, and Republicans are just as eager to vindicate the president. His 448-page written report, Mr. Mueller asserted, should speak for itself. In the end, though, the two committees issued subpoenas compelling Mr. Mueller to speak, and he accepted.”

Progressive Caban Leads In Queens DA Race

Queens D.A. primary too close to call, as Cabán narrowly leads Katz. NYT: “It was billed as a contest of criminal justice reformers, a six-way Democratic primary for district attorney in Queens that would soften the tough-on-crime policies that have long typified this working-class borough of New York. Tiffany Cabán, a 31-year-old public defender, holds a narrow lead over Melinda Katz, the Queens borough president. Ms. Cabán declared victory shortly after 11 p.m., telling the crowd at her watch party, ‘We did it y’all.’ But Ms. Katz did not concede; speaking to her supporters just before 11 p.m., she said that every vote should be counted. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Ms. Cabán led Ms. Katz by 1.3 percentage points. Roughly 3,400 absentee ballots have to be counted, with Ms. Cabán’s margin at roughly 1,100 votes. Board of Election officials said the count may not be completed until Wednesday, July 3. But Ms. Cabán’s campaign said they felt comfortable declaring victory because the 3,400 absentee ballots would be divided among the seven candidates listed on the ballot, making her lead difficult for Ms. Katz to overcome.”

First Presidential Debate Tonight

The Democratic debates, night one: political dynamics to watch. NYT: Some of the Democratic Party’s strongest orators, including Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Cory Booker of New Jersey, will be at the center of Wednesday’s Democratic presidential debate in Miami, the first of two this week. Ms. Warren is the only candidate on the first night who is polling in double digits, but there are plenty of intriguing story lines and political dynamics to watch for. The leading candidates on the stage Wednesday night have different ideologies, policy proposals and political styles. But they share a common strategy: All are betting big on Iowa. Mr. Booker and Ms. Warren have among the biggest campaign staffs there; Beto O’Rourke, a former representative from Texas, has barnstormed the state; and Amy Klobuchar, a senator from Minnesota, is the neighbor next door. Will any of them make Hawkeye-specific pitches?”

MORNING MESSAGE

David Hatch

Co-Governing Where The Rubber Meets The Road

People’s Action and its member groups have boldly moved into electoral politics, successfully electing our own members and candidates who share our values to office. We’ve done this by building training pipelines and strategies that have proven effective to elect progressive champions with whom we can co-govern. But there is another major aspect of governance that is just as important: engaging those who implement policies in agencies and commissions. It’s often these unelected officials who implement – or can block – important policies. They’re where the rubber meets the road. Many a legislative victory has been undone by the appointed officials, agencies and commissions who are tasked to implement and regulate the policies we have won. We have learned from experience to tell candidates we expect input on staffing commensurate with our level of support up front. Just as we have developed a successful pipeline program for training potential candidates, we have also created a pipeline program for staffers. We still have work to do in developing training for these prospective staffers and strategies to get them hired, but we’re on it.

Trump Brings U.S. To Brink Of War With Iran

Trump approves strikes on Iran, but then abruptly pulls back. NYT: “President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions. As late as 7 p.m., military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations. Officials said the president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries. The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off, a senior administration official said. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the official said.”

U.S. Opens New “Captured Children” Facility

Trump prepares to open new ‘captured children’ facility in Texas. Common Dreams: “A facility to house over 1,000 undocumented children is set to open Monday in Carrizo Springs, Texas—just days after almost 250 groups called on Congress to decriminalize migration and chart a new course for the country’s border policies. The Carrizo Springs concentration camp, which was initially built by Stratton Oilfield Systems as worker housing, will be run by Texas non-profit BCFS Health and Human Services for the federal Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). BCFS runs child detention centers for the federal government in Tornillo, Texas, roughly 489 miles from the Carrizo Springs facility. HHS spokesperson Victoria Palmer confirmed to Common Dreams that the agency was using Carrizo Springs as a camp to hold children. ‘All children will be sheltered in hard-sided structures at the Carrizo Springs facility,’ said Palmer. ‘Semi-permanent soft-sided structures will be used for support operations.’”

Impeachment Calls Grow, Pelosi Unmoved

Pro-impeachment ranks grow as Pelosi remains unmoved. Politico: “The number of House Democrats calling for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump has swelled to more than 70, showing momentum for efforts to oust the president, even as Speaker Nancy Pelosi refuses to go along with such a move. Just on Thursday, four Democrats — Nydia Velázquez of New York, Tony Cardenas of California and Jan Schakowsky and Sean Casten of Illinois — announced their support for an impeachment inquiry. That makes a dozen more Democrats now on record backing the inquiry since just last week, boosting the total to nearly one-third of the caucus. Included in the group are vulnerable freshmen members who beat Republicans during the last election cycle, and more Democrats are expected to announce their support in the coming days. The slow drip of members embracing impeachment isn’t entirely by accident. The rollout is being assisted by a handful of Judiciary Committee Democrats who have been providing tactical advice such as how to raise the issue with leadership and messaging support to their colleagues as they publicly back impeachment, according to multiple lawmakers and aides.”

Judge Roy Moore Runs For AL Senate

Roy Moore, accused child molester and twice-removed judge, announces 2020 Senate run. ThinkProgress: “Just 18 months after losing a special election in Alabama, a state President Donald Trump carried by a 62% to 34% landslide, Republican Roy Moore is back and seeking another shot at the Senate. Moore is hoping to challenge his former opponent, Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL), who bested him by 22,000 votes in December 2017. In a combative press conference, Moore announced his 2020 candidacy and lambasted the party establishment for trying to block his campaign. Moore’s announcement comes despite Trump’s prediction that Moore, an accused serial sexual predator and twice-removed state Supreme Court chief justice, would lose if nominated.”

Court Allows Title X Gag Rule

Ninth Circuit lets Title X gag rule go into effect, threatening health care for millions. Common Dreams: “The Trump-Pence administration’s Title X gag rule takes effect in every state but Maryland, after a ruling by a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Just yesterday, the House of Representatives passed a spending package that would block the gag rule from being implemented because it’s dangerous, it’s unethical, and it’s illegal –– and now the Senate must act. Trump’s gag rule makes it illegal for health care providers in the Title X program to refer patients for abortion, and also blocks access to care at Planned Parenthood by imposing cost-prohibitive and unnecessary “physical separation” requirements. Planned Parenthood has limited emergency funds that will allow affiliates to continue care for patients in the short term, while seeking further emergency relief from the Ninth Circuit. Title X helps millions of people struggling to make ends meet –– the majority of whom are people of color, Hispanic, or Latino –– access birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing, and other essential reproductive health care. Providers of care to nearly 50 percent of the Title X patients have made it clear that the rule would force them out of program –– the administration is putting health care at risk for patients across the country.”

MORNING MESSAGE

Jeremy Saunders

There’s No Turning Back New York’s Wave Of Justice

A blue wave surged across New York State last November, as voters elected true progressives to represent them in Albany. Almost as soon as this new generation of young progressives took office, the monied and entrenched interests who have long held sway over New York’s Democratic legislature began to circle their wagons. And as progressive voices in the legislature get stronger, demanding speedy passage of long-stalled bills, establishment legislators have increased their calls for patience. That’s why People’s Action groups like VOCAL-NY, Citizen Action of New York and Community Voices Heard and our allies are now committed to more than the occasional collective action. We’re building a united front and standing together. By standing together in this way, we’ve passed bill after bill this legislative session, but we’re not done: we’re still fighting for an equity-driven reform of our marijuana laws, an end to solitary confinement and the right for undocumented New Yorkers to get drivers licenses. In the last days and hours of our legislative session, we ask you to join our fight for the heart of New York, as we phone, email and take action.

SCOTUS To Decide On Census Citizenship Poll

Census battle over citizenship question leaves immigration activists with their hands tied. ThinkProgress: “President Donald Trump is trying his hardest to ensure that every American will be forced to report their citizenship status to the U.S. government during the 2020 census — a possibility that has left immigrant groups unsure of how to approach the annual national survey. Last Wednesday, Trump invoked executive privilege, refusing to share certain documents House Democrats have requested to investigate the inclusion of the citizenship question on the census. Hours later, the House Oversight Committee voted to hold Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress for their refusal to comply with subpoenas. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of the the citizenship question by the end of the month.”

Trump Purges Pollsters Who Admit He’s Losing

Trump campaign to purge pollsters after leak of dismal results. NYT: “President Trump’s campaign has decided to purge some of its pollsters after a leak of dismal internal polls for the president that he denied existed. Just two days before the president is set to kick off his bid for re-election, a top adviser said on Sunday that the campaign was cutting ties with three of its five pollsters to prevent further disclosure of survey data. The polling showed Mr. Trump behind former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. in several key battleground states, including by double digits in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The results were confirmed to The New York Times by advisers to Mr. Trump, but when they became public, he called them ‘fake polls.’”

4-Month-Old Migrant Taken From Parents

The youngest child separated from his family at the border was 4 months old. NYT: “The text messages were coming in all day and night with only two data points: Gender and age. With each one that arrived, the on-call caseworker at Bethany Christian Services in Michigan had 15 minutes to find a foster home for another child who was en route from the border. On a brisk winter day in February 2018, Alma Acevedo got a message that caught her breath: ‘4 months. Boy.’ Since the summer of 2017, the 24-year-old social worker had been seeing a mysterious wave of children arriving from the border, most of them from Central America. Those who were old enough to talk said they had been separated from their parents. “The kids were just inconsolable, they’d be like, ‘Where’s my mommy? Where’s my daddy?’” Ms. Acevedo said. ‘And it was just constant crying after that.’ None of them had been this young, and few had come this far.”

Bleak Outlook For China Trade Talks

Wilbur Ross tempers expectations of U.S.-China trade deal at G-20. WSJ: “Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross played down prospects of a major trade deal if President Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping meet at the Group of 20 summit in Japan later this month, but he said he believes the two sides will ultimately get back to negotiations. ‘I think the most that will come out fo the G-20 might be an agreement to actively resume talks,’ Mr. Ross said in a phone interview Sunday. ‘At the presidential level they’re not going to talk about the details.’”

U.S. Uses Disinformation To Fuel Iran Tensions

Disinformation used by US to justify Iran tension. CNN: “The U.S. State Department suspended funding to a program after reporters began asking questions regarding its online trolls who were targeting journalists. In recent days, the State Department has released video it claims shows Iranian responsibility for attacks on oil tankers in the Straits of Hormuz, but key U.S. allies Germany and Japan have demanded additional evidence before drawing any conclusions.”

MORNING MESSAGE

Michaela Lovegood

Whose Lives Matter? Our Lives Matter

Twenty years ago, I was a director of youth programs in the Chicago Housing Authority. I ran an afterschool, GED and job training programs for Black youth living in the city’s public housing. In the three years that I ran these programs, there were four times when I supported young poor, Black women in their choice to get abortions. Two of those pregnancies were the results of rape – one was by a family member. Under the oppressive laws now being pushed through state legislatures, these procedures may soon become illegal. Right-wing legislators – and even our president – crow about protecting the “right to life.” But the color and gender of that life affects its value in our society. What value do we place on a young Black woman’s future, or any girl or woman’s future? On her dignity, her sanity and her reputation in her community? Legislators have no authority over women’s bodies. Most of us know that; many of us embody that. Now, as voters and activists, we are in a position where we can do something about it. We have to do something about it. Whether or not you agree with abortion, no other person should have the right to determine what happens to your body or even to the life inside of your body against your will or agency.

House Passes DREAM Act

House passes latest DREAM Act, hoping to place millions of immigrants on path to citizenship. CBS: “With a handful of Republican votes, House Democrats passed the latest version of the DREAM Act, an ambitious expansion of a nearly two-decades-long legislative effort that would place millions of young undocumented immigrants and immigrants with temporary status on a pathway to U.S. citizenship. The Democratic-led chamber approved the sweeping immigration bill, dubbed the DREAM and Promise Act of 2019, by a vote of 237 to 187, sending the legislation to the Republican-controlled Senate, which is unlikely to consider it. The White House has also issued a veto threat against the measure. Seven Republicans in the House joined 230 Democrats in voting for the bill. No Democrats voted against the measure.”

Trade War Costs Consumers

Whatever Trump gave you in tax cuts he’s taking away with his trade war. LA Times: “President Trump’s 2017 tax legislation cut the tax bills of most middle-class wage earners in 2018 — a fact that the president and his allies in Congress have been trumpeting ever since. Nonpartisan estimates show that the bottom 80% of taxpayers by income received, on average, about $795. But that money wasn’t in anyone’s wallet for long. Their pockets were being picked by other Trump policies. One big swindle is a result of the president’s trade war. A new analysis published May 23 showed that tariffs on goods from China essentially negated any savings from the 2017 tax cuts — and that was without even accounting for the 5% tariffs he’s threatened to slap on goods from Mexico starting Monday. Tariffs lead to higher prices, so they wind up being paid by consumers like a hidden tax. Study after study published by economists this year has confirmed that the new tariff payments coming into the U.S. Treasury are ultimately coming from the pocketbooks of Americans, not anyone in China. Even if U.S. consumers buy domestic products, they still wind up paying more; higher prices on imported goods allow U.S. manufacturers to raise their own prices.”

Warren’s Plan To Reboot U.S. Manufacturing & Jobs

Elizabeth Warren presents plan to bolster American workers and manufacturing. Common Dreams: “Warren’s proposal does nothing less than turn inside out the globalist assumptions pursued by the past several administrations, Democrat and Republican alike. Where they have pursued more globalization of commerce as an end in itself (and as a profit center for U.S.-based multinational corporations and banks), Warren’s goal is to bring production and good jobs home. She knits it all together with a coherent plan, beginning with a new Department of Economic Development ‘with the sole responsibility to create and defend quality, sustainable American jobs.’ The new Department will replace the Commerce Department, subsume other agencies like the Small Business Administration and the Patent and Trademark Office, and include research and development programs, worker training programs, and export and trade authorities like the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The new Department will have a single goal: creating and defending good American jobs. Globalization didn’t just happen, Warren points out. America chose to pursue a trade policy that prioritized the interests of capital over the interests of American workers. Germany, for example, chose a different path and participated in international trade while at the same time robustly—and successfully—supporting its domestic industries and its workers. Warren proposes that every tool of American national policy be directed towards the goals of reclaiming domestic industry and producing good jobs for American workers. This, in her phrase, is the essence of economic patriotism and is the opposite of what most American-based banks and corporations do.”

Biden Borrows Coal Industry Language

Biden borrows coal industry language, Warren responds to Green New Deal. Salon: “It’s a tale of two very different Democratic climate change plans: Former Vice President Joe Biden’s new plan includes coal industry talking points, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s new plan channels the spirit of the Green New Deal. Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign immediately faced controversy after language from his climate change and education policy proposals was found to be unusually similar to that in other sources. The Washington Post reports: ‘Joe Biden’s presidential campaign lifted language without credit, at times word for word, when crafting its education and climate plans, incidents the campaign acknowledged and said were inadvertent.’ The parallels between Biden’s language and that of a coal industry group are particularly noteworthy, given how the former vice president has been criticized as insufficiently progressive on the issue of combatting climate change. CREDO’s Josh Nelson drew attention to this Tuesday, when he studied Biden’s climate change plan and discovered the language about carbon capture sequestration seemed to mirror that used by the Carbon Capture Coalition, a group which includes Arch Coal, Peabody Energy and Shell. The parallel language included both the Biden campaign and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions’ Carbon Capture Coalition describing the technology as a ‘widely available, cost-effective and rapidly scalable solution to reduce carbon emissions to meet mid-century climate goals.’”

Trump Claims US Is ‘Clean” On Climate Change

Donald Trump tells Prince Charles US has ‘clean climate’. The Guardian: “Prince Charles spent 75 minutes longer than scheduled trying to convince Donald Trump of the dangers of global heating, but the president still insisted the US was “clean” and blamed other nations for the crisis. Trump told ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Wednesday he had been due to meet the Prince of Wales for 15 minutes during his state visit, but the discussion went on for 90 minutes – during which the prince did ‘most of the talking.’ Trump said: ‘He is really into climate change and I think that’s great. What he really wants and what he really feels warmly about is the future. He wants to make sure future generations have climate that is good climate, as opposed to a disaster, and I agree.’ But Trump said he pushed back at the suggestion the US should do more. He said: ‘I did say, ‘Well, the United States right now has among the cleanest climates there are based on all statistics.’ And it’s even getting better because I agree with that we want the best water, the cleanest water. It’s crystal clean, has to be crystal clean clear.’”

How We Fight The Rollback Of Roe: We Organize

State by state, the Far Right is chipping away at women’s rights. Extremists are carving out a path for Trump’s Supreme Court to eliminate the right to safe and legal abortion that has been ours since the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling in 1974. By throttling reproductive freedoms in state laws, the Far Right wants to hollow out Roe to the point that states may no longer even offer reproductive care. This is pure intimidation. They’re hoping women and medical providers will shrink from their rights, out of fear for their lives and freedom. In New York State, we’re not scared: we’re fighting back. On January 22, the 46th anniversary of Roe, our State Senate passed the Reproductive Health Act. This new law fully legalizes abortion at any time to protect a woman’s life and health, and it was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo that same day. How did we win in New York State, and how can we win all across the country? The answer is simple: we organize. For half a century, Republicans have controlled our legislature. That changed last November, when a groundswell of organizing by Citizen Action of New York and our allies led to historic turnout and activism that has now completely shifted the trajectory and makeup of the Senate creating an undeniable majority for progressive values. Since January, already helped to pass important reforms for survivors of domestic violence; critical criminal justice reforms and access to early voting. And we’re just getting started. In New York, we know how to fight, and win. That’s our state of mind.

2020 Census Citizenship Poll Designed To Help GOP

GOP Redistricting Strategist Played Role In Push For Census Citizenship Question. NPR: “A major Republican redistricting strategist played a role in the Trump administration’s push to get a citizenship question on forms for the 2020 census. Thomas Hofeller, who died last August, concluded in a 2015 report that adding the question would produce the data needed to redraw political maps that would be ‘advantageous to Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites,’ according to a court filing released Thursday. Plaintiffs in one of the New York-based lawsuits over the question say that Hofeller later ghostwrote an early draft of the administration’s request for the question and helped form a reason for adding the question to forms for the national head count. The Trump administration has maintained it wants census responses to the question — ‘Is this person a citizen of the United States?’ — to better enforce Voting Rights Act protections for racial and language minorities. But Hofeller’s documents uncovered through a separate lawsuit suggest administration officials were aware that including the question ‘would not benefit Latino voters, but rather would facilitate significantly reducing their political power,’ argue attorneys with the law firm Arnold & Porter, the ACLU and the New York Civil Liberties Union in a letter to U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman.”

Trump Targets NM, NV, NH In 2020 Bid

Trump tries to upend the 2020 map. Politico: “President Donald Trump is targeting a trio of states that he lost in 2016 — a move aimed at widening his path to reelection that comes as he’s struggling in the Rust Belt states that propelled him to the White House. Trump officials are zeroing in on New Mexico, Nevada and New Hampshire, where they insist there’s an opening despite heavy losses Republicans suffered there in the midterms. They’ve deployed around a half-dozen staffers to New Hampshire and several to Nevada, an unusually early investment in places that favor Democrats. And the campaign is doing polling to tease out Trump’s level of support in New Mexico, a focal point for campaign manager Brad Parscale, and they have discussed dispatching aides to the blue state. The maneuvering underscores how Trump is trying to capitalize on his vast financial and organizational advantage over Democrats. Yet it also illustrates how the president, whose own polling shows him falling behind in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, is seeking out additional routes to a second term.”

Trump Wants To Make Protest A Federal Crime

Trump administration threatens pipeline protesters with up to 20 years in prison. Common Dreams: “Building on efforts by multiple states to crack down on those fighting the construction of climate-destroying fossil fuel infrastructure, the Trump administration unveiled a proposal on Monday that would criminalize pipeline protests at the federal level and hit demonstrators with up to 20 years in prison. The new proposal, released by Transportation Department’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, was immediately denounced by environmentalists as a serious threat to the First Amendment. ‘This dangerous proposal threatens to undermine Americans’ right to peaceful assembly and free speech,’ Kelly Martin, director of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fossil Fuels campaign, said in a statement. ‘It is a blatant attempt to intimidate those who would exercise their First Amendment rights to speak out against pipeline projects that put our clean water, communities, and climate at risk.’”

House Passes Disaster Relief, Overruling GOP

58 House Republicans just voted against the bipartisan disaster relief bill. ThinkProgress: “The House of Representatives passed a $19 billion disaster relief bill on Monday night by a vote of 354-58, sending the measure to President Donald Trump’s desk, where he is expected to sign it. The bill provides funds to hurricane and flood-ravaged areas like the Florida panhandle, Arkansas and Oklahoma, North and South Dakota, and Puerto Rico. All 58 of the ‘no’ votes came from Republicans. Among those Republicans who voted no were Reps. Chip Roy (TX) and Thomas Massie (KY), who previously blocked the legislation, which was passed by the Senate in May. Massie has notably requested federal disaster aid for his home state four times since 2015. Also among the noes were Tennessee Reps. Tim Burchett (R) and Scott DesJarlais (R), who both signed a letter to the president in March, requesting relief assistance following a wave of severe storms that inundated the state with floodwaters. The measure was previously set to pass late last month, but was blocked three times by Republicans Roy and Massie, who claimed attempts to approve the bill by unanimous consent (meaning the aid package would pass as long as no one objected to it) were too ‘swampy,’ as well as by Rep. John Rose (R-TN), who objected to passing the measure by a voice vote.”

House Sets Contempt Votes For Barr, McGahn

House Dems set contempt vote against Barr and McGahn. Politico: “The House will vote next week to hold Attorney General William Barr and former White House counsel Don McGahn in contempt of Congress for defying congressional subpoenas, according to multiple Democratic sources. The resolution would clear the way for the House Judiciary Committee to take Barr and McGahn to court to enforce their subpoenas and are a crucial step for Democrats seeking to accelerate their obstruction of justice investigation against President Donald Trump. ‘This Administration’s systematic refusal to provide Congress with answers and cooperate with Congressional subpoenas is the biggest cover-up in American history, and Congress has a responsibility to provide oversight on behalf of the American people,’ House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said in a statement. Barr has failed to comply with a subpoena for special counsel Robert Mueller’s fully unredacted report and underlying evidence; McGahn balked at a subpoena to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. The vote, which will take place on June 11, will also include broad authority for congressional committees to take legal action against the Trump administration in future subpoena fights, the Democratic sources say.”

Remember The Sufragettes

19th Amendment: A century of pioneering women in US politics. BBC: “One hundred years ago – on 4 June 1919 – Congress approved the 19th Amendment to the US constitution guaranteeing the right of American women to vote. The amendment was the product of decades of campaigning and slow progress since the first convention for women’s rights was held in Seneca Falls in 1848. In the years since, women had been thrown in jail for voting illegally, organised pickets across the country and chained themselves to the White House demanding representation. Rights were granted in a handful of, mostly western, states over the years but resistance remained. This amendment, officially ratified in 1920, prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex on a national level. In 2019 the US has more women in national politics than ever before, but still falls well short of equality. Ahead of the 2020 presidential election Democrats are now lining up to take on President Trump. This includes six women who have already announced their candidacy – a new record in itself. Whether or not this means the US may eventually get its first female president, a century on from the 19th Amendment’s ratification, time will tell.”

MORNING MESSAGE

Robert Borosage

In Search of a Green New Foreign Policy

As the 2020 presidential campaign gears up, progressives are forcing a serious and necessary reassessment of foreign policy. Just as they have clashed with the establishment over domestic issues, left-leaning candidates dispute both the “indispensable nation” fantasies of the liberal internationalists and President Donald Trump’s “America first” nativism. Though elaboration of a progressive foreign-policy alternative is still in its early stages, some lawmakers give reason for hope. Progressive candidates can expose Trump’s broken promise to end “stupid wars,” while his bellicose advisers Bolton, Pompeo, and Abrams scheme to enmesh us in a conflict with Iran or regime change in Venezuela. They can expose his global trade renegotiations as offering more sound than light. His embrace of more military spending and more tax cuts for the rich has simply trampled the promise to put America first. Exposing Trump’s foreign-policy grift is not only an opportunity; it’s a necessity. Progressives must address “America First” as the scam that it is and indict Trump’s dereliction of duty in the face of the world’s greatest danger. If they do, the evolving progressive agenda will help arm Democrats for the 2020 fight.

California Dems Back #NoMiddleGround

#NoMiddleGround goes viral as California Dems urge no compromise on Medicare for All, Reproductive Rights, and Bold Climate Agenda. Common Dreams: “Inspired by Sen. Bernie Sanders’s speech at the California Democratic Convention in California—in which the 2020 contender took a thinly veiled shot at fellow White House hopeful Joe Biden’s centrist policy approach—progressives made the Twitter hashtag #NoMiddleGround go viral on Sunday in an effort to make clear that there can be no compromises when it comes to confronting the global climate crisis, providing healthcare to all as a right, and battling inequality. ‘We have got to make it clear that when the future of the planet is at stake, there is no ‘middle ground,” Sanders said, in a clear reference to Biden’s reported middle-of-the-road climate agenda. ‘We will take on the fossil fuel industry and transform our energy system. When it comes to healthcare, there is no middle ground,” Sanders continued. “When it comes to abortion, there is no middle ground. When it comes to mass shootings and the fact that 40,000 people were killed last year with guns, no middle ground.’”

Trump’s Two-Front Trade War

Donald Trump’s two-front trade war just took a turn for the worse. ThinkProgress: “The Trump administration escalated its trade war with Beijing on Saturday as it began collecting higher tariffs on many Chinese goods arriving at U.S. ports, amid warnings from domestic manufacturers and retailers that the resulting higher prices will be pass directly to American consumers. U.S. officials began collecting 25% tariffs on many Chinese goods arriving in the U.S. on Saturday morning, the latest round in a series of tit-for-tat trade skirmishes between the world’s two largest economies. Trump announced last month that tariffs on $200 billion of goods arriving from China would rise from 10% to 25% and pledged to put levies on another $325 billion of Chinese imports at some point in the future. Meanwhile, the administration this week began threatening Mexico with tariffs, in an unusual gambit using international trade as a bargaining chip to force greater cooperation with the president’s stalled immigration policies. The double whammy of tariffs on China and Mexico raised the ire of investors, who expressed fears that Trump’s fiscal policies risk plunging the country into a downturn. Stocks finished down Friday after Trump’s announced threat on Thursday against Mexican goods shook Wall Street trading. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 335 points, or 1.4%, ending the day and week at 24,815.”

Impeachment Debate Heats Up

Dems hope Pelosi’s resistance to impeachment will crack in June. Politico: “For the House’s growing impeachment caucus, June is shaping up to be the most critical month to make their case to a reluctant Speaker Nancy Pelosi. A month packed with subpoena fights, hearings on obstruction of justice and legal battles over Trump’s financial records is certain to provide fresh ammunition to grow the pro-impeachment ranks. ‘The temperature’s rising, the plot is thickening. It’s hard for me to imagine Congress certainly leaving for the August recess without some closure on this,’ said Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), who supports impeachment. ‘The Hamlet act is, I think, wearing thin, and it’s becoming untenable and intellectually strange.’ But Democrats eager to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump fear they’re running out of time to persuade Pelosi to change course before presidential politics consumes Washington. The House returns from a weeklong recess on Monday a few days after special counsel Robert Mueller ratcheted up pressure on lawmakers by emphasizing that Congress is the venue for holding a law-breaking president accountable. Mueller’s words — the first he uttered since the start of his two-year investigation into the Trump campaign’s links to Russia and potential presidential obstruction — prompted a wave of House Democrats to endorse an impeachment inquiry.”

Booker Takes Stand On Gun Violence

Booker makes clear how he differs from Biden on gun licensing. CNN: “New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker had a response Sunday for former Vice President Joe Biden after his 2020 competitor expressed some skepticism earlier this week about Booker’s proposal for a federal gun licensing system. ‘There are states that have done this that have seen precipitous drops in gun violence,’ Booker said Sunday on CNN’s ‘State of the Union. ‘We need to start looking at the things that work.’ Speaking on the heels of a recent mass shooting at Virginia Beach that left a dozen dead, Booker said his previously announced set of gun control proposals would lower gun violence in the US overall and his call for a federal licensing system will take on the high level of gun violence in America.”
